Kmetija Stekar
Historic winery of the Slovenian Collio region, situated on the western part of the country a few steps from the Italian border. Kmetija Štekar is before anything else a farm, devoted to agriculture since its foundation in 1627, growing its own vineyards for the past several centuries. Appropriately named, the term ‘Kmetija’ actually stands for ‘farm’.
In the vineyard, starting from a clean agriculture, rigor and methods are applied that trace back to ancient popular beliefs of that area, methods that over time demonstrated themselves more authentic than anything else. In the cellar, the long macerations on the skins are the natural consequence of the path chosen to reward and highlight the value of the grapes as well as the soils.
The person to inherit and bring forward this incredible family tradition worth centuries is Janko, who still today keeps it alive caring personally for his grapes as well as the orchards that are so close to his heart. Janko’s wines are far from being aristocratic, and certainly not conforming to the rules of modern oenology.
These wines are sharp, raw, sometimes difficult, but of astonishing complexity. Each bottle is a different experience, different from the last. Janko’s wines are genuine, just like him.
